Meaning in graphics work
Wayfinding is the coordinated information that helps people understand where they are, choose a route and recognise their destination. It connects signs with the actual environment.
It is broader than a collection of arrows. Maps, destination names, decision points, sightlines and accessible information work together to support a journey.
Example and practical consequence
At a venue, visitors may need consistent directions from arrival through registration to an activity space. An individual attractive sign can fail if it appears after the point where the route choice is needed.
Survey the journey and use consistent destination language. Check placements, visibility and alternatives with relevant users and site responsibilities. Treat the sign artwork as one part of the information system, and record temporary route changes so a familiar template does not point to a moved, closed or inaccessible destination.
Take it to the next job
- Review the whole route and its decision points, not only individual signs.
