Meaning in graphics work
Version control records distinguishable revisions and their relationships so that changes can be reviewed and the intended state retrieved. It supports traceable collaboration and repeat work.
It differs from overwriting a file with the same name. A convenient latest label does not identify which content a reviewer or provider actually received.
Example and practical consequence
An updated campaign headline creates a different artwork version even when dimensions remain unchanged. The previous proof, comments and release history should remain associated with the earlier file rather than migrate silently.
Use stable revision identifiers and hashes where appropriate, and state how changes affect dependent approvals or handovers. Preserve accepted baselines alongside new drafts. This helps teams explain differences, recover earlier work and avoid using an old acceptance decision to justify a changed production input simply because the folder name stayed familiar.
Take it to the next job
- Bind decisions and handovers to immutable version identifiers.
