Typeface

A typeface is the design of a family of letterforms, often including related weights and styles.

Meaning in graphics work

A typeface is the design of a family of letterforms, often including related weights and styles. It is part of the visual identity of the text.

A font is commonly the particular implementation or file used to supply those letterforms. Naming a typeface does not establish that its required fonts are available or licensed.

Example and practical consequence

An artwork file may use a regular weight for body copy and a heavier style for headings. A substitute with similar appearance can still change line breaks and panel layout.

Record the actual fonts, styles and permitted use needed for the job. Check exported text and missing-font warnings before proof approval. Agree how the receiving provider handles fonts so an identity choice is not replaced silently during production or later local adaptation.
