Meaning in graphics work
Transparency allows an object to reveal or interact with content underneath, for example through reduced opacity, blending or a soft edge. It changes the relationship between objects.
Transparency is not the same as a background-free cut-out file, and different export or production settings can change how transparent effects are represented.
Example and practical consequence
An exhibition backdrop could combine a translucent colour shape with photography and text. Its screen preview may conceal interactions that become visible when the file is rendered for a different output workflow.
Use the agreed file format and review the receiving workflow's handling of these effects. Check important text, joins and colour changes after export rather than only inside the design application. Preserve the editable source so a later correction does not require rebuilding the composition from a flattened preview.
