Meaning in graphics work
A totem is a tall display or sign form used to present information through a vertical arrangement. The name describes its presentation shape more than its engineering construction.
A replaceable-panel totem, a fixed sign and a portable informational unit can have very different supports and servicing needs. Height alone does not identify their compatibility.
Example and practical consequence
An organisation refreshing an existing totem might replace inserts while retaining the base and frame. It needs measured panel openings, attachment details and condition information for that retained equipment.
Specify which elements remain, which are replaced and who checks the support and installation. Review viewing positions, sign hierarchy and access to the message. Avoid transferring stability, weather or safety statements from a broad totem category to the actual unit without evidence for its construction and site.
