Meaning in graphics work
Resolution describes how much image information is available or reproduced within a given physical extent. For raster artwork, effective pixels per inch at final size is a useful measure.
Pixel dimensions describe the file's grid; they are not a complete resolution requirement until the intended output size is known. Vector objects behave differently from raster images.
Example and practical consequence
A photograph may look sharp on a laptop but lose detail when enlarged across a display wall. Reducing its physical printed size increases effective pixel density without creating new source detail.
Calculate effective density from the actual placed image and final output size, including document scale. Ask the provider for a task-specific threshold and assess viewing distance and content; one universal number cannot establish suitability for every display or print process.
