Meaning in graphics work
A proof is a representation used to review a proposed output before proceeding. Its value depends on the version shown and the properties it is intended to demonstrate.
A content proof, dimension preview and colour-managed physical proof answer different questions. Approval of one does not automatically confirm the others or accept a manufacturing contract.
Example and practical consequence
A buyer may approve names and wording on a PDF while a production specialist separately checks dimensions and technical suitability. Both decisions need to identify the exact artwork version.
State what the proof covers and what remains untested. Bind comments and decisions to the file hash or immutable version, and obtain new review when relevant content changes. A generic approved label without scope, identity and version leaves the downstream team unable to determine what was actually checked.
