Print substrate

A print substrate is the surface or material receiving printed content.

Meaning in graphics work

A print substrate is the surface or material receiving printed content. It may be paper, film, textile, board or another specifically prepared construction.

The substrate name is different from the finished assembly. Adhesive, backing, coating, ink, laminate and attachment can change how the complete graphic behaves.

Example and practical consequence

A sign described simply as printed board leaves open the actual board grade, thickness, surface preparation and intended mounting. Two products in the same family may need different print settings.

Specify the exact variant and its relationship to the full job. Ask the printer to confirm ink/process compatibility and the buyer to confirm application requirements. Avoid carrying fire, durability or recovery statements from a broad substrate category into a finished object without evidence covering that construction and use.
