Meaning in graphics work
A marketing preference describes a person's chosen topics, channels or interests for promotional communication. It helps shape relevant messages within the permissions and restrictions that actually apply.
It differs from consent or another lawful basis. A person showing interest in artwork does not automatically give permission for unsolicited email or cross-brand enrolment.
Example and practical consequence
A Graphic Accord reader might prefer equipment updates but not event news. If that reader objects to marketing, an interest tag cannot override the objection or justify an equivalent sequence from Leaf Accord.
Keep preferences separate from eligibility and operator-wide suppression. Check the actual communication purpose, recipient context and current rules before each authorised campaign effect. This avoids confusing useful personalisation with a right to contact and prevents separate brand interfaces from becoming a way to duplicate messages or sidestep an existing refusal.
Take it to the next job
- Check communication eligibility separately from topic or channel preferences.
