The skill and its purpose
Scope tells readers when guidance applies and what still needs confirmation. A calculator may determine rectangle area from entered dimensions without establishing cutting allowances or installation suitability. A worked example may illustrate reasoning without reporting a real customer result. A source can address one model or jurisdiction rather than an entire industry. Precise boundaries keep useful information usable: the reader can perform the supported step and recognise the point requiring a provider, owner or competent specialist.
Work through the decision
Write a scope statement naming intended reader, application, inputs, geography or model where relevant, evidence date and excluded decisions. Place limitations beside the affected result rather than hiding them in a distant footer. State whether numbers are entered, calculated, estimated or observed and preserve missing values as unknown. Review the wording of benefits, environmental claims and safety language against the actual evidence. For technical or legal requirements, link the applicable current primary source and identify the confirmation needed for this job. Assign the resource a review owner when those requirements may change.
Practical exercise — fictional
In a fictional panel guide, the example calculates six rectangular faces each 600 mm by 900 mm: one face is 0.54 square metres and six give 3.24 square metres. Draft a scope note explaining that this is printed-face geometry from fictional inputs, excluding bleed, trimming allowances, material yield, transport and installation checks. Do not describe the result as purchased material quantity or a carbon saving. Add a next step asking the selected provider to confirm production allowances and the physical application before any material instruction is released.
Take it to the next job
- Name application, inputs and evidence boundary.
- Place relevant limitations beside the result.
- Distinguish entered, calculated and observed values.
- Assign confirmation and review responsibilities.
Try the decision
