The skill and its purpose
Technical information is most useful when the next person can identify the source, actual product and conditions it describes. A broad label such as suitable for displays leaves geometry, method and assembly questions unanswered. A document should remain attributable to its issuer and revision, with its limitations intact. A manufacturer declaration and an independent report are different forms of evidence.
Work through the decision
Collect the current official record for the exact variant. Record issuer, reference, revision, date, declared method, scope and relevant application limits. Preserve units and the basis of reported values. Keep unsupported or missing properties unknown. Distinguish downloadable availability from permission to reproduce the document. When contributing a record, publish only the permitted fields and link readers to the authoritative source where appropriate.
Practical exercise — fictional
A fictional manufacturer has a current product page but the available PDF concerns an earlier revision. Draft a technical-record entry that preserves both references and labels the applicability question. Ask for the current document rather than changing the old PDF’s date. Explain what a buyer should confirm before using that record for a finished assembly.
Take it to the next job
- Record issuer, identifier, revision and date.
- Keep units, method and scope intact.
- Distinguish declaration and independent evidence.
- Check rights and current applicability.
