The skill and its purpose
Finishing connects the textile graphic to its use: an edge, pocket, attachment or seam can affect visible geometry and handling. The required convention belongs to the actual system and selected provider. A previous job’s finishing detail is reference information until reconfirmed. Recording the detail separately from a visual proof makes it clear which technical decision must be accepted.
Work through the decision
List every proposed finishing feature and its purpose. Reference the current template, orientation, units and scale. Ask the provider to confirm the positions and relevant artwork regions for the actual assembly. Identify details that change visible content or production geometry, then obtain the affected review. Retain the confirmed finishing specification beside the exact production version and quantity allocation.
Practical exercise — fictional
A fictional hanging textile needs a top pocket and a lower edge treatment. The team’s old template does not identify the intended hanging system. Draft the finishing enquiry and show which layout decisions must remain provisional. If a confirmed pocket changes the visible area, identify the artwork review that must be reopened before release.
Take it to the next job
- Name each finishing feature and purpose.
- Confirm orientation, scale and template revision.
- Identify effects on visible artwork.
- Retain technical acceptance with the released file.
Try the decision
The exercise stays in this session unless you choose to save it.
