The skill and its purpose
A file check can establish only what its actual method inspects. A fingerprint identifies bytes; a dimension calculator checks entered geometry; a specialist preflight tool may inspect particular PDF properties under a selected profile. None of these should be described as a complete production approval without the relevant scope and evidence. A useful report names the method, version, inputs, findings and unresolved checks.
Work through the decision
Separate manual observations from automated findings. Record the exact file and the checker or profile used. Describe each finding in terms of its actual evidence instead of guessing the cause. Identify production questions outside the method, such as physical fit or provider-specific finishing. Keep a clean result within the tested scope and obtain the required technical acceptance separately.
Practical exercise — fictional
A fictional team hashes a PDF and checks its stated scale with a calculator. Draft a report showing exactly what these actions establish. Add three unassessed areas: font handling, process-specific colour and actual fixing requirements. Explain why no PDF parsing or comprehensive preflight should be claimed from the hashing result.
Take it to the next job
- Name the actual method and its scope.
- Tie findings to the exact file version.
- Distinguish findings from inferred causes.
- List unassessed production requirements.
Try the decision
The exercise stays in this session unless you choose to save it.
