The skill and its purpose
Availability is a property of an actual asset over time. An event’s opening dates alone omit packing, outbound travel, return and inspection. A plan can therefore appear conflict-free while two events need the same equipment in transit. Record the entire blocked interval and keep provisional plans distinct from an authoritative accepted reservation in the shared inventory.
Work through the decision
Identify the asset or assembly and the required components. Enter the use dates plus preparation, transport and turnaround. Compare the resulting intervals against every relevant booking. Review condition and component readiness separately; a free date does not establish fitness. Resolve overlapping requirements before commitment. The guest planner can reveal conflicts, but concurrent authoritative reservations require the engine transaction.
Practical exercise — fictional
A fictional stand is in use from 10 to 12 November, needs one day for travel each way and one further day for inspection. Another team requests it on 14 November. Build both intervals and explain the overlap under your recorded allowances. Test an alternative plan rather than treating the second request as automatically accepted.
Take it to the next job
- Identify exact assets and required components.
- Include preparation, travel and turnaround.
- Compare complete blocked intervals.
- Separate planning results from accepted reservations.
Try the decision
The exercise stays in this session unless you choose to save it.
