Meaning in graphics work
Lead time is the interval required between an agreed starting condition and a defined delivered result. Its meaning depends on what starts and finishes the clock.
It differs from a generic industry estimate. Artwork release, material availability, order acceptance and payment conditions can affect when a provider's actual lead time begins.
Example and practical consequence
A printer may describe production time after receiving usable approved files, while the campaign team needs a delivered graphic at site. Those intervals are not equivalent and may exclude transport or installation.
Ask the provider to state the scope, assumptions and dated commitment. Use illustrative durations only where they remain labelled and adjustable. Backward planning should preserve accepted promises and show the effect of changed inputs, avoiding a timetable that appears feasible only because it starts production before its necessary conditions are met.
