Meaning in graphics work
Knockout means an overlapping object removes the underlying image in its own area rather than combine with that underlying output. It affects how separations interact.
The alternative is overprint. Neither setting is universally correct; the choice depends on colours, objects, trapping decisions and the intended production process.
Example and practical consequence
A pale logo on a strong background may need its own area cleared so the underlying colour does not alter the intended appearance. Another design element may intentionally combine with the background.
Check the exact objects and provider's output requirements rather than applying one setting to every element. Review edges and mixed transparency where relevant, and record any correction as a new version. A visually familiar proof cannot substitute for examining the separation behaviour needed by the actual job.
