Understand the construction
Fibre-reinforced composite panels combine reinforcing fibres with a matrix or other supporting construction. The fibre type, matrix, layup and surface treatment are needed to identify the product; composite alone does not describe a usable graphic specification.
For a fabricated sign component, establish whether reinforcement is required by the design or merely offered as an alternative sheet. The person responsible for fabrication needs to understand cutting, edge finishing and attachment, while the designer needs the accepted graphic surface.
Specify the actual job
Specify the actual panel product, construction, thickness, intended print or applied face and fabrication geometry. Ask which processing instructions and occupational controls apply. The support and fixing design should come from a competent assessment of the panel and its installation conditions.
Limits and evidence
Do not infer structural capacity, fire performance or weather resistance from the presence of fibres. Different matrices and layups can create very different products. Nor does an attractive printed surface establish how machining, damaged edges, repair or component separation should be handled.
Obtain current product and fabrication documentation, plus relevant evidence for the proposed use. A sample can help assess print appearance, but it cannot replace appropriate structural or site assessment. Any recovered-content or recovery-route claim needs its own evidence for the actual composite.
Next useful action
Add the fibre and matrix description to the material board and flag missing fabrication guidance as a decision blocker. Ask the provider to confirm the finished-edge and fixing approach before the graphic design is released for manufacture.
