Meaning in graphics work
Die cutting uses a prepared cutting tool to produce a defined shape from suitable sheet material. The tool and material construction govern the result.
It differs from a digitally guided contour cut and from the printed artwork's visible outline. Cut, crease and other tool instructions need clear separation from printed content.
Example and practical consequence
A folded countertop display may use a cutting form to create slots, tabs and edges repeatedly. The production file must distinguish those instructions from customer-facing text and images.
Confirm the cutter's template, tolerances and material suitability before releasing quantities. Keep tool revisions linked to artwork revisions so a changed panel does not inherit an obsolete cut form. Prototype assembly can reveal fitting problems that a flat PDF preview does not show, particularly where folded parts or interlocking tabs carry the design.

- Approve the production shape and prototype separately from the printed face.
