Meaning in graphics work
A dead-letter queue holds messages or jobs that cannot complete under their normal retry policy. It makes persistent failures available for accountable investigation rather than endless repetition.
It differs from an archive of every successful operation. The queue needs enough provenance to explain what failed and what safe recovery would require.
Example and practical consequence
A malformed provider event may be separated after validation fails, preserving its safe metadata and affected record reference. Operations staff can then review the issue without exposing confidential payloads to public reporting.
Record the reason, intended effect, attempts and responsible owner. Reprocessing must respect current scope and idempotency so a repair does not duplicate earlier external work. Moving a job out of the queue is not proof of success; the actual resulting state and relevant evidence need confirmation before the exception is resolved.
