Meaning in graphics work
A colour reference is the agreed target against which colour appearance or measurements are assessed. It can be a controlled sample or another explicitly defined reference.
It is different from a colour name or an uncontrolled screen image. The viewing conditions, substrate and measurement method affect whether a comparison is meaningful.
Example and practical consequence
A campaign team might supply an accepted physical logo sample and ask the printer to explain what can be reproduced on the selected material. A photographed sample sent through messaging is a weaker reference.
Identify who accepted the reference, its version and how it will be used for review. Record any limits or approved compromises before production. This prevents different participants from judging the same output against incompatible memories, devices or documents and turns a colour discussion into a traceable job requirement.
