Meaning in graphics work
A coating is a layer applied to a surface to change a defined aspect of its preparation or finish. Its formulation and application method determine its role.
It is different from a separate laminated film and from the underlying substrate itself. A coating may support print reception, appearance or protection without answering every performance question.
Example and practical consequence
A display panel can have a factory-prepared print surface and later receive another protective treatment. Those are separate layers whose compatibility and application instructions need to be recorded.
Identify the coating purpose, actual product and relevant evidence rather than using coated as a complete specification. Confirm what happens at edges, joints and cleaning surfaces. A successful visual finish cannot establish a safety rating, long-term durability or recovery acceptance for the coated assembly; those require appropriately scoped information.
Take it to the next job
- Identify each coating's purpose and compatibility with adjacent layers.
