Bleed

Bleed is artwork extending beyond an intended cut boundary so that small cutting variation does not expose an unprinted strip at the finished edge.

Meaning in graphics work

Bleed is artwork extending beyond an intended cut boundary so that small cutting variation does not expose an unprinted strip at the finished edge.

It is not a border, safe margin or permission to change the trim size. The appropriate allowance depends on the provider and production construction.

Example and practical consequence

A full-colour poster background can extend into bleed while its headline stays inside the safe area. A template for a sewn fabric graphic may require different allowances from a paper poster.

Obtain the actual provider's requirement and preserve it in the specification. Check all edges, placed images and export settings; adding blank space outside a page does not create useful printed bleed where the design stops at trim.
