Understand the role of a release liner in a finished job

Record a release liner as a distinct component and plan its handling rather than assuming it shares the finished graphic’s route.

Describe the supplied construction

For an adhesive graphic, identify the face material, adhesive, print, protective finish and release liner where present. The liner supports the product’s handling before application, but it may not remain in the installed assembly. Record its declared construction from the exact supplier information rather than inferring paper or plastic composition from appearance. Keep product identity and any relevant regional variant with the evidence.

Distinguish installation and end-of-campaign material

The installation team may remove a liner during application, while the printed face and adhesive remain at the site until a later removal. Those are different material streams at different times and locations. Give each a responsible custodian and planned destination. Do not count the liner as retained installed material merely because it was delivered in the same package. Use actual quantities or mark estimates clearly when planning.

Ask about a real acceptance route

If recovery is intended, ask a relevant provider to confirm acceptance of the actual liner type, contamination condition and quantity. A substrate statement about the printed film does not automatically describe the liner. A liner collection programme may have specific scope and arrangements that need current confirmation. Record the actual accepted route and any exclusions rather than describing all release liners as recyclable through ordinary local collections.

Worked example — fictional

A fictional installer applies a set of window graphics at three locations. The selected provider identifies the liner separately from the printed film. The installer collects liner material at application and records the planned receiving route, while the campaign’s removal plan remains concerned with the installed graphic. One site produces mixed contaminated material, so its acceptance question is kept separate. At closeout, the team describes actual collection evidence only for the material that the receiving provider accepted. It does not use a generic film recyclability claim to describe the liner outcome.

Common pitfalls

A similar-looking liner can have a different declared construction or acceptance route. Delivery weight can include packaging and liners, so it is not automatically installed material mass. A proposed recovery programme is not evidence of a completed transfer. Avoid publishing a material saving or recycling percentage without an appropriate defined boundary and actual records supporting that claim.

Connect the component to the plan

Use the disassembly or material board tool to list component identity, where it is removed, who handles it and which destination is confirmed. Ask the selected supplier for missing construction information and the receiving provider for scope. Record actual custody changes and keep unsupported outcomes unknown. The next campaign can then plan installation waste separately from the end-of-use graphic rather than merging them into one material label.

Take this to the next job

  • Identify declared liner construction
  • Separate installation and campaign-end streams
  • Assign custody and destination
  • Confirm actual receiving scope
  • Describe only supported transfer outcomes
