Confirm a recovery route for the finished graphic

Ask about the actual assembly, contamination, collection and destination before using a recycling statement.

Describe what will remain

List the printed substrate, adhesive, coating, fixings and any other components. Estimate quantities for planning but record actual returned quantities when known. Identify whether items can first remain in use, be repaired or be reused. A generic material label is not enough for a provider to confirm acceptance.

Ask the receiving provider

Record what exact material they accept, separation requirements, contamination exclusions, collection constraints and the proposed destination. Keep the answer dated and tied to the actual job. A technically recyclable material may have no available local route for this assembly or quantity. A proposed route is not evidence that collection or treatment occurred.

Keep the real transfer record

Use the applicable official guidance for business waste and the relevant jurisdiction. GOV.UK describes duties including safe storage and checking a waste carrier’s registration. The responsible business must confirm the requirements for its actual situation. Retain acceptance, collection and destination evidence where available, then describe the outcome within that evidence rather than claiming universal recyclability or verified environmental savings.

Worked example — fictional

A fictional event produces returned printed panels with adhesive film and metal fixings. The team separates retained usable items first and describes the remaining assembly to a recovery provider. The provider accepts only a specified separated fraction and excludes contaminated material. That answer is recorded with the actual date, collection conditions and proposed destination. The campaign plan therefore does not label every complete panel recyclable. After collection, the team retains the relevant actual acceptance and transfer evidence and describes only the supported outcome. If the destination or acceptance changes, the record is updated rather than relying on an old policy statement. Quantities are marked estimated until measured or otherwise confirmed. The exercise does not invent a statutory reporting endpoint, licensed carrier member or achieved environmental saving.

Decision checkpoints

  • Inventory: describe exact components, condition and quantities, distinguishing estimates from observed actual amounts.
  • Priority: consider continued use or repair before deciding that an item must leave useful circulation.
  • Acceptance: obtain the receiving provider’s current scope, separation conditions and collection requirements for the assembly.
  • Outcome: retain actual custody and destination evidence and state only the result those records support.

Common pitfalls

  • A substrate’s theoretical recyclability does not establish an available local route for a printed layered assembly.
  • A proposed carrier or destination is not evidence that the material was actually accepted and transferred.
  • A general recovery percentage without a defined boundary and measured records can misrepresent the campaign outcome.

Use it on your next job

Complete the assembly and evidence register, then request current acceptance from the responsible recovery provider. Check the applicable official guidance and jurisdiction for the actual business situation. Confirm collection and recording duties through the responsible team. After the event, reconcile planned and actual quantities, custody and outcome, preserving unconfirmed items as explicit follow-up tasks.
