Record knit weave coating and finish information

Record textile construction and finishing as distinct facts instead of inferring properties from a generic fibre label.

Start with an identified product

Record the actual supplier, product reference, variant and document date before collecting construction details. A broad fibre description is only one part of the specification. Ask whether the product is knitted or woven, what composition is declared and which coating or treatment belongs to the supplied variant. Keep these answers as stated facts with a source, not as a platform inference based on a product photograph or a familiar commercial name.

Connect construction to the application

Define the intended use, frame, attachment, viewing sides, repeated handling and any cleaning requirement. Ask the provider which construction characteristics affect those requirements for this exact product. Do not assume that every knit stretches similarly or that every woven fabric is suitable for the same process. If the provider proposes an alternative, compare it against the actual application questions and preserve its distinct product reference. An unanswered performance question remains open.

Describe what finishing adds

Record print process, edging, seams, backing, coating and other relevant additions separately from the base textile. A document about an unprinted substrate may not support statements about the finished graphic. Identify what the selected provider will supply and what another team will add. Keep evidence for those steps within its scope. Environmental information and application suitability can be connected to the same product without becoming one undifferentiated rating.

Worked example — fictional

A fictional buyer compares two proposed textile variants for a retained frame. Both supplier descriptions mention polyester, but one record identifies a coating and the other leaves construction unanswered. The buyer does not treat them as equivalent merely because the fibre label matches. The selected provider is asked to confirm the attachment convention, printing process and repeated-handling instructions. The material board records one proposed assembly with a complete edging description and another with explicit gaps. Neither is marked accepted until the actual fit and application questions are resolved.

Common pitfalls

Do not convert a composition statement into claims about local recyclability, fire acceptance or colour performance. A photograph cannot establish a coating or weave specification reliably. A technical document can cover several grades, so check the exact reference. Treat marketing terms as descriptions to clarify rather than allowing a generic material family to overwrite known variant differences. If a supplier changes product naming, retain the previous reference and confirm the relationship.

Create an assembly record

Use the material board to collect product identity, construction, finishing and source references. Add responsible questions for missing data and export the proposed specification for the selected provider. Record accepted answers with dates. Keep the complete finished graphic connected to its frame and intended campaign, so the next replacement enquiry can use an exact construction record rather than ask for an unspecified fabric similar to the last one.

Take this to the next job

  • Identify the exact product variant
  • Record declared construction and composition
  • Separate coating and finishing
  • Ask application-specific questions
  • Keep evidence scoped to the supplied assembly
