Prepare cut paths as part of a controlled specification

Define cut geometry, finishing intent and file conventions with the selected provider.

Name the physical result

Describe whether the job requires a contour cut, internal opening, separate piece or another defined finish. Record the finished dimensions, material assembly and intended handling. A drawn outline may communicate an idea without being a valid machine path. The selected production provider must confirm the exact convention they accept for identifying and processing cutting information.

Separate artwork from production geometry

Ask how the cut path should be named, positioned and represented in the file, including any relevant layer or spot-colour convention. Use the actual provider’s instruction instead of inventing a universal path name. Confirm the relationship between the printed image, bleed and finished edge. Identify whether multiple pieces or paths need references that correspond to the quantity and packing schedule.

Check intended and accidental cuts

Review the file through the appropriate authoring and production workflow. Confirm whether paths are complete and which elements are intended for cutting rather than visible print. A basic browser geometry tool can record dimensions but cannot establish the cutter’s actual interpretation. Keep specialist findings and provider acceptance linked to the exact artifact. Any path correction that changes the finished shape should prompt relevant visual or specification review.

Worked example — fictional

A fictional campaign requests a shaped counter graphic with one internal opening. The designer provides a concept outline, then the selected provider explains its accepted file convention. The production version distinguishes the exterior boundary and intended internal cut from decorative printed lines. The buyer confirms the resulting finished shape against the actual application, while the provider accepts processing requirements. A later design edit moves the internal opening; that is a specification change, not merely a different screen arrangement. The updated manifest names the corrected path version.

Common pitfalls

Duplicated outlines can create ambiguity or unintended processing, so use an actual check rather than relying on appearance. A cut boundary can be correct while bleed or safe content remains wrong. Small details can need process-specific review that a nominal size calculation cannot provide. Do not describe a conceptual contour as production-certified or assume that the same convention transfers unchanged to another provider’s equipment.

Create a complete finishing handover

Record the accepted path convention, dimensions, template and actual file version with the finishing specification. Use the artwork tool for transparent geometry and a checklist of external checks. Ask the provider to confirm the intended cut result and identify any unresolved limits. Include item references so produced pieces can be reconciled with the site or kit list before dispatch. Consider how finished pieces will be identified after cutting. A correct contour can still produce a confusing kit if identical-looking pieces lack the site or variant reference needed during packing and installation.

Take this to the next job

  • Define the intended finished shape
  • Obtain provider-specific path instructions
  • Separate printed and cutting elements
  • Review changed geometry
  • Link accepted paths to item quantities
Put it to work. Use the connected free tool to prepare your own record. Final production requirements come from your chosen provider.
